You're using the EC fonts (probably because you're using T1 instead of
OT1 encoding).  Unfortunately, those are different fonts than Computer
Modern, and Debian doesn't have PS versions of them.  You have a few
options: buy the European Modern fonts from http://www.yandy.com, add
\usepackage{ae} to fake things with CM fonts (although it means cut
and paste may not work as well in the pdf), and maybe another option
or two I don't know about.

If that doesn't work, you've at least gotten further... post the
version of GS you're using.
