Look closer. There should be at least two VFS lines. For example, from a
server I built yesterday:

cvs:~# dmesg | grep VFS
VFS: Diskquotas version dquot_6.4.0 initialized
VFS: Mounted root (cramfs filesystem).
VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly.

This machine uses ext3; but the same holds for ext2.

Yeh, you're right. Actually I realized that later when I looked at another machine that I had also successfully upgraded.
Nonetheless, it still doesn't resolve my problem.
