Try this:

for(0 .. 7) {
  $salt .= join '', ('.', '/', 0..9,'A'..'Z', 'a'..'z')[rand 64];
} 

$password = crypt($password,'$1$' . $salt . '$');

I *think* that's how I did it once. It might actually work.
