I downloaded the netinstall version of the cd and tried to install from a 
CD-R made from it

Unfortunately

a) My reiserfs partition is not recognised
b) My ext3 partitions fail to mount as ext2 because they need the replay log 
run on them as a result of the completely failed system

I do not think the underlying problem in this thread is that I have out of 
date packages trying to live with an updated libc6.

Its more like a ldconfig that needs to be run and isn't

AGAIN I REPEAT - HOW SHOULD LIBC6 be updated so the rest of the programs do 
not start to segfault.

In the end I have gone back to my backup (pre update) to get the server 
working
