Hi Richard,

I think it would be much easier for you to use kernel-package and then
compile your kernel with initrd support as such:

make-kpkg --initrd --custom=custom.0.1 kernel-image

This will create a deb package that upon INSTALL (not compile) will
then call mkinitrd and otherwise take care of everything for you.
