The problem you reported is fixed in tetex-bin, version
1.0.7+20001218-4, which is now available from unstable.

See Bugs #94457 and 94546 for more information, including a patch
you could apply if you didn't want to upgrade your tetex-bin
package at this time.


Also, note that the texconfig script is actually part of the
tetex-bin package, not the tetex-base package (although there are
texconfig-related files in tetex-base).  You can find out the
source of a script or other executable by using

   gnulinux% dpkg -S `which <filename>`

where <filename> is the name of the script or other executable
you're having problems with.  This method ensures that you're
seeing the provenance of the file you're actually trying to run,
rather than any file with a similar string in its name.  (``dpkg
-S'' will also work with any file that is part of a Debian
package, of course, just drop the backticks and ``which''
command.)
