While installing I get the following error:

I am using Debian 1.2 (potato), Linux version 2.2.6, libc-2.1.3.
tetex-lib v1.0.6-6, tetex-base v1.0-10, tetex-bin v1.0.6-6

Thanks, that solved it.  That is: the language.dat-dpkg* one was the
right one.
