I got impatient and reinstalled 5.0.4.  Currently i'm wrestling with x again.

it is really too little information for me to help. How is your
computer connected to the internet? is there some other machines on
your LAN? what's the output of the following commands (as root)?

# ifconfig

# cat /etc/network/interfaces

# cat /etc/resolv.conf

[...]
