Yes, the actual files with contents. If you check the mirror trees, you
will find that all the Packages.gz|xz and Release and Contents and
whatnot files are symlinks to them.

This is a difficult problem & I think I understand further why it works the way it does.

Unimportant question: Is the 4 times a day thing why the preferred mirror sync concept was changed to a push notification vs pull?
