Sure, but continuing to use ftp.* as the primary name for a server that
doesn't offer FTP any more just seems plain silly. Changing them to,
say, mirror.ccTLD.debian.org, and leaving ftp.ccTLD.debian.org as a
CNAME to mirror.ccTLD.debian.org would be easy and sensible.

Right, so you as a mirror operator don't want to provide FTP - that's
just fine, and the consensus so far does appear to be "it should be up
to each mirror whether they want to offer FTP or not - it should not be
a requirement any more".

... and with that you jump to "I (and probably some other mirror admins)
don't want to support FTP, so all mention of it and support for it
should be withdrawn right now" which:
(a) concerns me, as people do still use FTP, and I'm sure there's
plenty of mirror operators out there who will continue to provide FTP
access, whichever way the discussion goes (I will); the mirror list
should, IMO, indicate which mirrors are providing FTP service and which
aren't;
(b) suggests that the ftp.* names need to be changed ("mirror" would
seem a suitable replacement, I'd have thought).
