hi,

i think you should first run a
  apt-setup
to set up an apt aource (maybe http source) - its automatically menu-driven.

then you should use
  apt-get dist-upgrade
this should then show all appliable new or upgraded packages to use.

one thing what is needed before is a live internet connection - try to connect
your computer to the internet.

if all fails type
 apt
and then press <TAB> twice
then you see all apt-programs and for each you can type
"man apt-..." or "apt-...  --help"
