Dédicace à Ian Murdock
Ian Murdock, le fondateur du projet Debian, est décédé le 28 décembre 2016,
chez lui, à San Francisco. Il était âgé de 42 ans.
Il est difficile de mesurer la contribution de Ian au logiciel libre. Il a
dirigé le projet Debian de sa création en 1993 à 1996, a rédigé en
janvier 1994 le Manifeste de Debian et a fait mûrir le projet émergent tout
au long de ses études à l'université de Purdue.
Ian est devenu le directeur fondateur de Linux International, le directeur
de la technologie du groupe Free Standards, puis de la Fondation Linux et
responsable du Projet Indiana chez Sun Microsystems qu'il a décrit comme
« tirant la leçon de ce que Linux a apporté au système d'exploitation et en
le fournissant à Solaris ».
Le succès de Debian témoigne de la vision de Ian. Il a inspiré la
contribution d'innombrables personnes dans le monde entier sur leur temps
libre et avec leurs compétences. Plus de 350 distributions sont reconnues
comme dérivées de Debian.
C'est pourquoi nous dédions Debian 9 « Stretch » à Ian.

Ian Murdock, the founder of the Debian project, passed away on 28th December
2015 at his home in San Francisco. He was 42.
It is difficult to exaggerate Ian's contribution to Free Software. He led the
Debian Project from its inception in 1993 to 1996, wrote the Debian manifesto
in January 1994 and nurtured the fledgling project throughout his studies at
Purdue University.
Ian went on to be founding director of Linux International, CTO of the Free
Standards Group and later the Linux Foundation, and leader of Project Indiana
at Sun Microsystems, which he described as "taking the lesson that Linux has
brought to the operating system and providing that for Solaris".
Debian's success is testament to Ian's vision. He inspired countless people
around the world to contribute their own free time and skills. More than 350
distributions are known to be derived from Debian.
We therefore dedicate Debian 9 "stretch" to Ian.
