If you look into the "startkde" -script which handles KDE startup and
shutdown, you'll find that the following programs are run at the end of
the script:

kdeinit_shutdown # stops kdeinit started programs
dcopserver_shutdown # shut's down the KDE IPC system
artsshell -q terminate # stops the arts sound server

I'm currently running Fluxbox and use a couple of KDE programs
(konsole). In my ~/.xinitrc, after the window manager exits
kdeinit_shutdown and dcopserver_shutdown are run. This causes the
konsoles lying around to shutdown nicely after which X exits.
