It is my experience that sometimes settings from older versions of kde does
not fare well with newer versions. Perhaps renaming .kde/share/config/kmailrc
(so that kde3 generates a new) will do the trick (configuration setting will
offcourse be "lost"). Otherwise you should find the culprit somewhere in the
.kde sub-directories...
