I just checked on ATI's website; it's Mach64 based. This is probably
the cause for your problems... Debian unstable's Xfree4.0.2 doesn't
support the Render extension on this card. The only way (known to
me) is to compile Xfree from CVS and install it - I've done it, it
works then. However, it's certainly not for newbies... (BTW, if you
need to find out whether the installation "worked" you can find out
whether you now have the extension with the xdpyinfo command)

Doesn't matter, Debian's Xfree86 4.x doesn't contain any 3D
acceleration support for Mach64 cards (while there is, again, an
experimental driver for the card in a certain branch of the DRI
project's CVS).

There were reports of extreme slowdowns with AA enabled when you've
got too many fonts, I don't know if this has changed.

I think this "just works" when the RENDER extension is available in
the X server and you switch it on in the control center. That worked
for me.
