Ecco l'errore responsabile del problema:

E [02/Jan/2006:19:35:18 +0100] PID 8950 stopped with status 22!

E la soluzione e' ovviamente installare foomatic.
Grazie mille del suggerimento, ora la stampante funziona come di dovere.
