Is there a version of apt that runs better on the hurd than the
others? Should I be using 0.3.19.0 from alpha.gnu.org, or 0.1.9 from
the ftp.xx.debian.org repository?

Having apt *not* freeze up the machine on a regular basis would make
the auto-compiling of packages a lot smoother.
