The next version of apt should be fine. The archive at alpha.gnu.org is only
meant for temporary uploads for the impatient and for testing. Currently,
there is dpkg (doesn't build from source, am waiting for the CVS version to
be released), util-linux (hackery-hack), apt (only small issues, will be
fine soon), X 3.3.6 (big mess, 4.0.1 was worked on in the meanwhile, but
changes are not incorporated).

I think the X situation will only change dramatically when Branden releases
his 4.0.1 packages (which hopefully have the patches I sent him by then).
util-linux is a bad little boy: Nobody wants to port it properly and send
the changes back to the maintainer. It isn't hard, but the current Makefiles
are simply crap, that's why. dpkg CVS version is partially broken, so it is
not going to be released soon. I could backport my changes, but I am more
currently interested to work on other, original stuff.

Thanks,
Marcus
