The main section of the menu is the Freedesktop vFolder/Menu specification. The Debian/ tree is the distro-specific Debian menu files stuff. Personally I wouldn't like to see the Debian menu integrated into the GNOME menu, I feel the GNOME menu categories are superior, and contain far less junk items (the Debian menu contains xlogo, xsetroot, xedit, dc, orphaner, etc). I also feel that the Debian menu system should be ditched in Sarge+1 and replaced with the Freedesktop menu spec, but that is the cause of the two flamewars.
