Me too.

Don't forget that some of the RAM might be assigned to the graphics card.
I've had computers that simply wouldn't boot the kernel with only 64 MB
RAM (while others did). Upgraded to 128 MB they all did and worked like
a charm.

Maybe KVM doesn't do this (gives own amount of RAM to graphics
emulation) and thus allows less main RAM.
