That there is some information associated with each source tar.gz file
that controls where it will be unpacked.

Also you could extend this one step further by having some information
associated with each path file that controls the -p level,
directory level and/or file to use when patching the source.

This allows using prestine source and patch files that don't always
adhere to the rules we would like them to adhere to.

(currently in Heimdal, for instance, when somebody sends my a path,
I include the entire message in debian/patches. This allows somebody
to see exactly who contributed the patch, when they did so, and why
they did so. However, I have to alter the path to be the full path of
that file, which means any GPG signatures on that E-Mail suddenly become
invalid).
