Thank you all that replied. It turned out thankfully to only be the cable. It was ever so slightly loose. The timing of the event worried me, the problem only surfaced after a pretty nasty brownout, which took the machine down. On boot, the hda: interrupt lost message was everywhere. What I suspect happened is the vibrations from running / poweroff / poweron in under a second may have jogged the cable (probably already a bit loose) just enough to cause problems. Thank all again.
