not a bug in tar (in fact, your test pretty much eliminates that
possibility..) However: does your "cd" alias print anything? Take a
look at
(cd /lib/modules; tar -cf - 2.0.27) | od -a | head
and see if it has anything before the / l i b / m o d u l e s you
should see as the beginning of a tar file...
If that's it, \cd should work [use the builtin, not the alias.]
