Perl modules and perl upgrade
Hi dear co-developers,
I've just sent a mail to Darren asking him to upload perl5.005 to unstable
because I do not want to wait three weeks before the freeze like I did
for slink. :) I'm volunteering for coordinating the work of updating
all perl modules in order to properly work with perl5.005. All the changes
that will have to be done are not definitively decided but I hope that
it will be done rapidly. I'll send a mail to all developers concerned
when the new perl will be uploaded.
In order to make the period with troubles as short as possible, here's
a list of package that will have to be updated... please confirm me that
you will be able to update your package rapidly (some days) after
the upload and ask for NMU if you can't. Send me all those information
by private email. I'll post a list of package that will have to be updated
by non-maintainers to this list so that everybody can help.
Programs that have their own modules that are not intended to be used
by other perl scripts should install their package in a personal
directory (like /usr/lib/<package>) and indicate in the scripts where
to find the modules (with a « use lib '/usr/lib/<package>' »). I think
it's the best way to prevent other path-related problems with perl.
We should do the same for Debian specific module but we can allow
to put those modules to /usr/lib/perl5/Debian and also add a
« use lib '/usr/lib/perl5/Debian' » to the scripts that uses them.
In this list are included all the packages with perl module in
/usr/lib/perl5 and not packages that are compiled with perl (like
vim-perl), those package will also need to be recompiled but
it's more difficult to track those package.
