Why is nslookup being deprecated?
Hi,
On my system, I get :
jorel@trillian:~$ nslookup
Note: nslookup is deprecated and may be removed from future releases.
Consider using the `dig' or `host' programs instead. Run nslookup with
the `-sil[ent]' option to prevent this message from appearing.
Why is this being considered? 'nslookup' is part of the standard
DNS tools that has carved its place out in the toolchest of UNIX admins
everywhere. To say that there are better tools around and therefore it
should be removed is like saying 'perl' is better than 'sed', so lets
deprecate it and not supply it in Debian. I sincerely hope this will not
come to pass - if only because the definitive book on DNS and BIND uses
nslookup in its examples.
Regards,
Jor-el
