The machine that I am seeing this on has nodetach in use.  So it's 
probably something different.

For other people seeing the same problem, pppd detaches from the terminal 
before it becomes stuck.  So
"ps aux | grep pppd | grep -v tty | grep -v grep" will give you a list of 
the stuck processes...
