ESD faulty after suggested recompile

Somebody suggested that I recompile ESD like this:

$ apt-get source esound
$ tar fvvxz esound-0.2.20.orig
$ cd esound-0.2.20.orig
$ ./configure --prefix=/usr
$ make
$ make install
$ /etc/init.d/gdm restart

I completed all of the steps except the last one, only restarting esd instead of gdm... Before recompiling, many songs (mp3) sounded worse in under ESD in XMMS than under OSS, but one was much worse than the others (the outcast).  After recompiling, I find that all of my songs except the outcast sound the same under ESD and OSS...  Only recently, while troubleshooting, I found that the outcast is sampled at 48 khz (a.k.a. DAT) instead of the standard 44 khz.  Has anybody else had problems listening to 48 khz songs? Any help will be appreciated
