【SPI 近況】 Nils Lohner [2]辭去了 [3]Software in the Public Interest（SPI）
總裁的職務，Ean Schuessler 則被[4]任命為新的副總裁。SPI 提供包含 Debian 在內
的數個自由軟體計畫法律和財務上的幫助。在最近一次的董事會中對章程委員會（by-
laws committee）的[5]授權達成了決議。John Goerzen 將主持這個委員會進行章程的
修改。這個委員會還需要三位[6]自願者的加入。此外，SPI 董事會正在接受各界[7]提

【專訪：無愧於以 Linux 為名】 [9]The Age 本週刊載了 Sam Varghese 撰寫的一篇
[10]專訪，文中他訪問了 Debian 文件發行小組（Debian Press Team）的一位成員。

【3.0r1 升級光碟】 雖然在前一陣子的假期中因為[15]硬體出了問題造成一些延誤，
Steve McIntyre 終於還是完成了供 Debian 3.0 更新至 3.0r1 光碟映像檔的[16]製作

【Debian 移植到 x86-64 上的可能性】 Bart Trojanowski [19]表明他對移植 Debian
到 [20]AMD 即將發表的 x86-64 平台上很有興趣。[21]x86-64 是 AMD 新的 64 位元
處理器，能同時支援 32 位元及 64 位元運算。Michael Banck 和 AMD 的開放原始碼
代表[22]討論了取得 x86-64 硬體的可能性，但取得硬體的同時我們必須[23]簽署一份
有問題的保密協定（evil NDA），這對 Debian 來說是無法接受的。

【Itsy Package Management System】 Josh Narins [24]好奇地想知道現在還在執行
Debian 的最老舊的硬體是什麼等級。在一些人提出他們仍在服役中的 [25]486 和
[26]386 使用 Debian 後，話題轉到在這些資源有限的環境下，dpkg 執行起來相當
慢。Josh 說他[28]找到一個名為 [29] Itsy Package Management System（iPKG）的
套件管理系統。iPKG 的作者儘力把它設計成和 Debian 的套件管理系統相似，並且能
支援 .deb 格式的套件。不過，iPKG 主要是針對像掌上型電腦等容量有限的
GNU/Linux 環境所開發的一個非常輕量（lightweight）的系統。

【自由軟體授權是可以終止的？】 最近 [30]Advogato 上[31]討論到在程式開發者終
止使用如 GNU [32]General Public License（GPL）的授權方式時，若這個動作要追溯
到舊版的程式上是否合法。討論也延伸到[33]契約法（contract law）在對[34]版權
（copyright license）的強制性和規範力上所扮演的角色（如果有的話），還有自由
軟體的授權方式是否具永久性。現在這個部份的定義相當模糊，在各地因為法令的不同
而會有不同的答案。因此，有人提出更新 GPL 的要求，希望在這個具爭議性的地方有
更明確的定義。

【網頁編碼的問題】 Tomohiro Kubotai（久保田智?）[35]發現如果使用多位元編碼
（multibyte encoding，如日文的 ISO-2022 和韓文的 EUC-KR），non-ASCII 字元在
自動產生出來的各種語言[36]網頁中會造成嚴重的問題。他指出 ISO-8859-1 和
KOI8-R、EUC-JP 一樣是區域性的字元編碼方式（而且他們之間相互衝突），因此不應
使用在指定使用其它編碼方式的網頁中。同時，non-ASCII 字元應該改用 HTML
entities 來表示。

【Kernel 不支援 Ext2？】 Marcel Kolaja [37]注意到對 i386 和 i686 最佳化的兩
個 kernel 在編譯時對 second extended filesystem（Ext2）的設定不同，後者將支
援 Ext2 這部份編譯為模組。[38]Josselin Mouette 和 [39]Daniel Jacobowitz 解釋
說這並不是一個 bug，kernel 在啟動時會載入包含這些模組的 ramdisk。附帶一提，
在 Linux 2.6 中，initrd 將會被 initramfs 取代。

【改變 Debian 的版本編號命名規則】 Scott James Remnant [40]提議變更版本編號
的命名規則，因為他認為 Debian 的下一版將是重大更新，所以應該稱它為 Debian 4

【新增 dns-server 虛擬套件？】 Toni Mueller [42]建議為 nameserver 增加一到兩
個虛擬套件。他發現 Debian 中有好幾個 nameserver 相關套件，而這些套件之間互相
衝突的情況是可以解決的。Michael Poole 則[43]質疑，其實許多相衝突的套件只要經
過適當的設定，是可以共存的，因為這樣把他們設定為相互衝突是否不太合適？

【在膝上型電腦 Vaio 上安裝 Woody】 Roger Lipscombe 寫了一篇[44]摘記說明他如
何在他的 Vaio SRX87 上安裝 Debian 3.0（Woody）。因為這台機器附的是安裝程式現
階段尚未支援的 firewire 介面的 DVD-ROM，因此他必須使用 PXE 由網路開機，再進
行網路安裝。

【製作 .deb 的 .deb 套件包】 Steve Traugott [45]想知道是否有工具可以把一個
Debian 套件和它所需要的相關套件及 debconf db deltas 包成一個套件包。他嘗試實

【關於 radiusd-freeradius】 Chad Miller [48]說明 radiusd-freeradius 現在的狀

【CUPS 和 SSL】 Jeff Licquia 向 GNU TLS 的開發者[51]詢問是否可以把 TLS 中
OpenSSL 相容函式庫的授權方式改為 GNU [52]Lesser General Public License
（LGPL）。GNU TLS 團隊的 Nikos Mavroyanopoulos [53]回覆說這個要由該函式庫的
作者決定。Jeff [54]說他可能得要自己動手修改，讓 CUPS 改用 GNU TLS。

【任意要求將套件從檔案庫中移除】 由於 ftp 管理者（ftpmaster）收到愈來愈多要
求將套件從檔案庫中移除的 bug 回報，James Troup 發了一封[55]信給 品質保證小組
（QA team）。這些移除套件的要求常常不是該套件的維護者或是品質保證小組所提出
的，而是來自各地的人們，大部份甚至不是開發者。James 認為不該由 ftp 管理者決
定是否要將套件移除。以後移除套件的要求將由品質保證小組討論並作出決定。

【X-box 上的 Debian】 如果你正在物色一個不錯的數位錄影及家庭娛樂的平台，也許
