# grep 416 kernel-image-2.2.20-i386-2.2.20/ -r
kernel-image-2.2.20-i386-2.2.20/config/compact:# CONFIG_SCSI_SYM53C416 is not set
kernel-image-2.2.20-i386-2.2.20/debian/config:CONFIG_SCSI_SYM53C416=y
kernel-image-2.2.20-i386-2.2.20/debian/config:# CONFIG_SCSI_SYM53C416_PROBE is not set
So the old "vanilla" flavor is the only one with sym53c416 driver
built-in. You see, it is not your problem. Please try with bf2.4 or
compact flavor, it should not crash there

Not really. I looked for a posible reason while detection, but I cannot
see where the SCSI driver are probed.

Just to clarify it: did you really use bf2.4 or idepci?
Gruss/Regards,
Eduard.
