Well, /var needs to be huge because apt-get downloads to there and
isn't clever enough to download/install/flush to fit the size of the
parititon.

I would say it should be from 200MB to 800MB.  Actually, what I do is
what is advocated in the large disk howto, that is:

 /var -> /disk/sda4/var  
 /home -> /disk/sda4/home

Where /disk/sda4 is the mount point for a 4GB disk.

Not really.  I my system (sparc) that returns 493.
