| I've just recently become a lurker on this forum, but I'm running Debian
| Woody on an AlphaPC with a TGA card, and everything seems to work just
| fine. Sounds to me like a bad interaction between the GDK libraries and the
| X-Server for your particular card.

I have an old matrox card which is very common and this bug occurs with the 
gtk apps.
