I have created a master and an upstream branch that you can use with git-buildpackage going forward. You can drop the debian branch.

Regarding the license.
According to the thread you mention, the Gutenberg Project license fails the DFSG, so my assumption was wrong.

At the same time, according to the license there are no restrictions to distributing the ebooks if the Project Gutenberg license and all references to Project Gutenberg are removed from distributed material. This is confirmed by the thread in legal list.

There are three ebook samples in source tarball that were downloaded from Project Gutenberg website. One of the samples was later modified, so that there are no references to Project Gutenberg. The other ones have reference to the Project inside the ebook.

To comply with DFSG I will remove the Project Gutenberg license from d/copyright, so that the Project Gutenberg trademark is not used anywhere.
I will also remove two of the samples. The ones that still have references to the Project in ebook text.
