Bug#996552: RFS: newlib/3.3.0-1.2 [NMU] -- C library and math library for embedded systems

Package: sponsorship-requests
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-CC: pkg-electronics-devel@alioth-lists.debian.net, glaubitz@physik.fu-berlin.de
Control: affects -1 src:newlib

Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package "newlib":

 * Package name    : newlib
   Version         : 3.3.0-1.2
   Upstream Author : various Newlib contributors
 * URL             : https://sourceware.org/newlib/
 * License         : various non-copyleft licenses
 * Vcs             : https://salsa.debian.org/debian/newlib
   Section         : devel

It builds those binary packages:

  libnewlib-dev - C library and math library intended for use on embedded systems
  libnewlib-doc - C library and math library intended for use on embedded systems (doc)
  libnewlib-arm-none-eabi - C library and math library compiled for bare metal using Cortex A/R/M
  newlib-source - C library and math library for embedded systems (source)

To access further information about this package, please visit the
following URL:

  https://mentors.debian.net/package/newlib/

Alternatively, one can download the package with dget using this
command:

  dget -x
https://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/n/newlib/newlib_3.3.0-1.2.dsc

Changes since the last upload:

 newlib (3.3.0-1.2) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   * Non-maintainer upload.
   * Upload to unstable.

This is merely a re-upload of my previous NMU to unstable, now that it
has cleared NEW in experimental.

For those who aren't in the loop, the purpose of my NMU has been to
introduce a newlib-source binary package. This binary package includes
the source of Newlib so that it can be extracted into a combined tree
at build time of various GCC packages, such as my gcc-sh-elf.

This approach to building Newlib for the various ports brings many
advantages which I shall not espouse in detail here, including
bootstrappability and, when combined with an appropriate simulator from
GDB, being able to run the GCC test suite.

I have filed an Intent To Salvage (ITS) Newlib and have not gotten any
pushback yet, but this is still best dealt with an NMU right now given
that was very recent. This should probably go into a delayed queue to
be on the safe side.

Once this package is in unstable, that'll be the last blocker for
uploading gcc-sh-elf (and hence carl9170fw) to unstable. The latter is
important because the Kernel Team is working to accommodate my new
source package by dropping carl9170.fw from the next firmware-linux-
free upload so I can take it over.

(Well, there's still one other blocker to uploading carl9170fw, but
that's not relevant; I'm waiting to hear back from someone about the
copyright situation.)
