The reasoning is that in many (most?) Debian installations, exim is used
as a drop in replacement for sendmail. Likewise, /usr/sbin/sendmail is a
symlink to exim.

I guess the question to Debian would be, is there a reason why
/usr/lib/sendmail can't be a symlink to /usr/sbin/sendmail which is then
a symlink to /usr/sbin/exim, other than the obvious extra hop for the
symlink?

I think that if /usr/lib/sendmail is a symlink to a proper drop-in 
replacement though, as it is in Debian, maybe this is OK...
