FREE STANDARDS GROUP
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Reports to: Board of Directors
Job Summary:
The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the day-to-day operation
of the Free Standards Group and for ensuring that the Free Standards
Group meets the objectives set by the Board of Directors. The executive
director will carry out the mission of the Free Standards Group and
provide innovative leadership to establish the Free Standards Group as a
leader in the free software community.
The Free Standards Group is a non-profit corporation. Our mission is to
accelerate the use and acceptance of open source technologies through
the application, development, and promotion of standards.
The size of the Free Standards Group staff is expected to be less than
20 full time equivalents (for the next two years) with roughly fifty to
one hundred volunteers from the free software community and other
organizations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Personnel management, delegation of tasks to staff, tracking of
staff performance
* Program development and management
* Manage funding and sponsorship programs
* Plan strategy and build relationships with other organizations and
companies
* Financial management
* Carry out policies established by the Board of Directors
* Manage advocacy and public relations efforts
* Plan and coordinate standards conferences and meetings
Personnel Management responsibilities:
- Assume responsibility for human resources, financial management,
facilities management and supervision of the paid staff of the Free
Standards Group.
- Provide leadership and support for all program management and
staff of the Free Standards Group.
- Make hiring and termination decisions for all staff positions.
- Establish and implement personnel policies.
- Serve as direct supervisor and ensure annual evaluation of the
management and administrative teams and set salaries.
- Develop infrastructure and funding resources to support current
programs and future growth
Funding responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain a funding program to support the organization's
goals.
- Increase corporate sponsorships.
- Establish an individual sponsorship program (presumably 501c3)
- Manage individual memberships
Strategic & Relationship responsibilities:
- Build on Free Standards Group relationships with outside groups to
forward our goals, represent the Free Standards Group at
conferences and trade shows.
Fiscal responsibilities:
- Keep the Free Standards Group financially sound.
- Prepare short and long-term budgets for Board approval and make
spending decisions as specified by Board policy
Board relationship:
In addition to the relationship specified in the Free Standards Group
bylaws, the ED's performance is reviewed by the Board of Directors. The
Executive Director reports to the board quarterly on the status of the
Free Standards Group.
Qualifications:
- Experience/degree equivalent to Bachelor's degree or higher
- Long-term experience in the free software community desirable.
- Experience working in volunteer organizations and committees
composed from multiple organizations
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, and
management skills are essential.
- Ability to work independently with frequent interruptions.
- Good computer skills (or willingness and ability to learn)
essential, as well as basic understanding of computer and
technology standards.
- Experience managing a budget (ideally, one exceeding $250,000
per year)
- Exceptional presentation, writing, and speaking skills.
- Experience working with a board of directors is desirable.
In the event that the candidate is hired as the Free Standards Group ED,
he or she will be required to sign a standard employment and
confidentially agreement.
