I think that using .rpm or .deb is no-sense because
different distributors package the files into a different way.
I wonder if there are 2 distributors that package the files into the
same way (example: RedHat and SuSE).

So i think it is very hard to install a package from another
distribution.
Also if you use 'alien' to convert package it requires perl and others
software ... so it is best to use a normal .tar.gz file

What is your opinion instead about source distribution 
like FreeBSD /usr/ports/ ?
