it would be simpler for simple upgrade issue to link /usr/local -> /opt, so the kde would go, for expample, in /usr/local/kde (similar to AIX structure). also the upgrade program could make this link if it sees there is no reserved partition. so, how i see thinks, it would be really easy to manage the transfer.
