Strictly speaking, this is actually already in Firefox because I begged and
pleaded, and they grandfathered it in. Without it OverbiteWX and OverbiteNX
wouldn't even work.

Yes, the aim is very similar to OverbiteWX. Without installing any browser extension. Also cross-browser compatible.

If gopher is whitelisted as a registerProtocolHandler protocol, users of web/http proxies will not need to install a browser extension. (Could still use the NX/Onyx concept to use a local proxy.)

Any website, like the Floodgap Proxy, could request the user's permission to register itself as a `gopher:` protocol handler using a line of _javascript_.
