What about an option to call gophernicus (i.e., from PHP or another script) and retrieve data to stdout, for example? That way you can have the best of both worlds (built-in, plus external web server/script support without sockets). Any local CGI-capable httpds could then call the gophernicus binary, passing it the parameters to retrieve the relevant data/resource.Bucktooth has such a feature; see gopher://gopher.floodgap.com/0/buck/dbrowse?faquse%207
All inetd-compatible gopher daemons do that by design, Gophernicus and Bucktooth included. I'm not sure if that's a good idea for a HTTP gateway though...
