By default the width of a gophersite is 70 symbols. I suspect that
comes from the early monitors.
But, besides tradition, is there any reason why you should not increase that?
Besides maintaining compatibility with traditional terminal widths, which are still in some use, (I imagine this is especially true among the folks that work to keep gopher alive), I find limiting text widths to 80 columns or less to be more aesthetically pleasing. It makes for a much nicer user experience to not have to read all the way across a wide screen, IMHO.
However, it is your server, so you can do what you like.
