Package: apt
Version: 1.0.9.8.4
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

Attempting to install openjdk-8-jre

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
Ran the command "sudo apt install openjdk-8-jre"

   * What was the outcome of this action?
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
openjdk-8-jre : Depends: openjdk-8-jre-headless (= 8u121-b13-1~bpo8+1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

In an attempt to diagnose the issue, I manually attempted installation of unmet dependencies until I reached the bottom
of the 'stack', so to speak. I received the following error which I beleive concisely explains the issue:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
		 openjdk-8-jre-headless : Breaks: ca-certificates-java (< 20160321~) but 20140324 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

So I'm guessing there was a security or otherwise major update, only two days ago, and the repository hasn't caught up yet.
I apologize if this bug report is at all misconfigured, this is my first.
I would assume a simple workaround would be to manually install ca-certificates-java v20160321 but I have not tried that myself.

Thanks for the awesome distro!

That sounds like you are trying to install a package from backports, but
you aren't telling apt that it is allowed to do so.

Try:
apt install openjdk-8-jre/jessie-backports
apt install -t jessie-backports openjdk-8-jre

(The first one will try to stick to stable packages as much as possible,
which might not always work and results in a similar error to what you
already saw)

I /guess/ the ca-certificates-java requirements were raised in the last
version of openjdk-8-jre compared to previous versions: In the past the
stable ca-certificates-java version was "enough" while now you will need
to get that package from backports as well.

apt isn't automatically picking packages from backports for installation
due to (implicit) configuration, so you have to tell it to that with one
of the commands above.

Either way, an uninstallable package isn't a bug in apt – it might be
that it isn't installable due to a bug, but even if that would be the
case the "bigger" bug is with the uninstallable package itself as it
needs to be working with the current (for this release) tools.

Thanks for taking the time to report and investigate a bug – and as its
your first welcome as a Debian contributor! I am closing the bug with
this message through as I think as outlined above this is "just"
a misunderstanding. There might be something said about impoving the
user experience here, but that's a) hard und b) various other open bugs
are talking about that, so having another one about the same seems more
distracting than helpful.

I hope I am not discouraging you with this as that isn't the intended
– to stay on top of bugs against apt we just have to be rigid in closing
bugs to not drown in them.

Lastly, a small tip: Be very careful with the release-critical bug
severities. If you aren't 200% sure it is "grave", don't report it as
grave. The maintainer can always bump it if needed, but starting at
"grave" carries the notion of "drop everything including partner, kids
and dayjob and fix that NOW".

Best regards

David Kalnischkies
