Package: apt
Version: 1.0.9.8.3
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

In 'man apt.conf', there is the following paragraph:

           Acquire::http::Proxy-Auto-Detect can be used to specify an
           external command to discover the http proxy to use. Apt expects
           the command to output the proxy on stdout in the style
           http://proxy:port/. This will override the generic
           Acquire::http::Proxy but not any specific host proxy configuration
           set via Acquire::http::Proxy::$HOST. See the squid-deb-proxy-
           client(1) package for an example implementation that uses avahi.
           This option takes precedence over the legacy option name
           ProxyAutoDetect.

but the syntax in
Acquire::http::Proxy::$HOST
seems wrong. the correct should be:
Acquire::http::Proxy $HOST

I tested the syntax Acquire::http::Proxy::$HOST in a machine with an
apt-cacher-ng installed, and although no error raise, the apt-cacher-ng
is not used. the dir /var/cache/apt-cacher-ng don't change size and files
/var/log/apt-cacher-ng/apt-cacher.log and /var/log/apt-cacher-ng/apt-cacher.err
don't change.

When I used Acquire::http::Proxy $HOST, during an apt-get update and
apt-get install xjig, the dir /var/cache/apt-cacher-ng was writen and
the file tail -f /var/log/apt-cacher-ng/apt-cacher.log changed.

some evidence:
# more /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/02cache
Acquire::http::Proxy "http://localhost:3142/";;

# tail -n 5 /var/log/apt-cacher-ng/apt-cacher.log

1479155085|O|121273|::1|debrep/pool/main/x/xjig/xjig_2.4-14+b2_amd64.deb

the wrong syntax appears in version 1.3.1 of apt package also.

No. That's completely different things, as your quote also
references:

Acquire::http::Proxy::www.example.com "proxy.example.com";

uses proxy.example.com as the proxy for www.example.com.

Acquire::http::Proxy "proxy2.example.com";

uses proxy2.example.com as the proxy for all hosts not having
a specific proxy specified.
