You can't use aptitude for this at the moment and expect correct results (see #841347). apt includes 'apt-mark' which can be used for checking (and setting) the state which is always apts view on the matter. We have a few tests covering autobits, so I don't expect that to be a general issue, but specific to certain situations – if still present – so saving /var/lib/dpkg/status & /var/lib/apt/extended_states before attempting to reproduce this and attaching them if reproducible with the exact commands you run might help in getting to the bottom of it.
