Package: apt

Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

since sourceforge changed some technical details of their service a few months
ago, debian repositories hosted on sourceforge are no longer handled correctly
by apt-get.
With the following line enabled in /etc/apt/sources.list

deb https://sourceforge.net/projects/un-applet/files/debian debian main

when trying to do "apt-get update" the following error occurs:

This is apparently the same problem as described at:
https://sourceforge.net/p/forge/site-support/12143/

I can only guess about the reasons for this, I suppose it might have something
to do with some fancy http(s) redirections sourceforge does, which maybe apt in
not able to handle correctly.
Interestingly the bug does not occur on an outdated system which still has an
old LMDE install running, which has not been supported for about two years
(which is basically Jessie as testing, "frozen" on a state somewhere in 2014).
This system still uses apt-0.9.12.1 which handles the sources.list entry
mentioned above correctly, allowing to perform "apt-get update" and afterwards
installing packages from this repository.

Another try on debian testing with apt-1.2.12 again failed, but this time with
a different error message:

Reading package lists... Done
W: The repository 'https://sourceforge.net/projects/un-applet/files/debian
debian Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Data from such a repository can't be authenticated and is therefore
potentially dangerous to use.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration
details.
E: Failed to fetch https://sourceforge.net/projects/un-
applet/files/debian/dists/debian/main/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones
used instead.

The contents of the repository have been checked to be ok, an exact copy of the
repo on a different server (sources.list entry
deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/unapplet/debian debian main )
worked without problems, so I think the problem must be somehow related to the
way sourceforge handles http(s) requests and apt's failure to deal with this
correctly.

Michael

APT is forbidding https → http redirects in "recent" versions, which
result in this error. That isn't a bug, but a feature™ as such
a downgrade would silently disable all benefits a user wanted to get by
using https in the first place. You can compare this with a browser
disallowing mixed content. The mentioned ticket suggests you will have
to use another URI which doesn't perform the https → http redirect, but
I haven't tried.

The behaviour is different in different versions based on other
circumstanzas: As you might have noticed, in both instances the Release
(and its signed counterparts) are ignored meaning they failed to be
downloaded (thanks to the ill redirect probably). Older versions
accepted this silently, but apt/stretch is starting to complain hard
about not having a Release file. apts need to support everything somehow
ends up producing a relatively unspecific error here but it is a red
hering.

Add
-o Acquire::Progress::Ignore::ShowErrorText=1
to the commandline and the newer apt version will flood you with
Protocol "http" not supported or disabled in libcurl
as well.

Or use 'apt update' which has stricter than 'apt-get update' already and
requires repositories to be signed (which your repo is, but apt can't
get the file, so in its view it isn't signed).

So, as this isn't a bug in apt, but a user/repository configuration
issue I have to close this report as invalid – or wontfix perhaps as we
will not allow https → http redirects.

Best regards
