Dear Maintainer,

I tried to install pidgin (adwaita-icon-theme is one of its dependencies). APT was doing fine until it tried to install adwaita-icon-theme, which made it freeze. I tried uninstalling pidgin and the dependencies APT had successfully installed, running apt-get -f install at the suggestion of APT, etc. APT went haywire and kept giving me error messages.

I finally solved the problem by running bleachbit on APT (which does apt-get autoclean, apt-get autoremove, apt-get clean, and deletes the package lists).

I tried to install pidgin again and was successful.

I apologize if this 'bug' doesn't merit reporting. This is my first time reporting a bug to the Debian Project and I'm a bit apprehensive about doing so.

In which way was it "freezing"? theme packages tend to be big (this one
is ~30 MB) and installing operates in a way which makes writing a file
slower than usual (but with the benefit that it is really written to
disk if the install is done – if you write a file "normally" it will
linger in various caches for a while which makes everything faster, but
if e.g. the power is lost the file content is potentially not in the
place it should be – that would be bad if you need that file to boot up
your system), so maybe it was just taking a while to install it?

How did you stop apt? It doesn't react (immediately) to ^C, so I guess
you killed the apt process? Note that if you did that, it is perfectly
possible that the dpkg process apt had started (which does the actual
installation) continued to run in the background.

That would explain at least why APT "went haywire" (details would be
helpful here, too). While …

… that worked which shouldn't help at all in such situations, but as you
run that later the background process might have finally completed
'restoring' apt functionality.

Thats good! It also means it isn't reproducible through, which makes
potential bugs hard to identify. :(

Every bug is worth reporting! So thanks a lot for taking the time &
welcome as a contributor to the Debian! :)

Unfortunately this report lacks details which are hard to recover after
the fact and you couldn't reproducible it. I have this package installed
myself as probably many others and I don't see other reports of this.
As apt is just orchestrating the installation, if there is a bug its
more likely in dpkg. And as installations are taxing for the hardware
even problems with that aren't completely unlikely.

So I am going to close the report as I fear that if I don't do it now,
someone doing mass-bug-triage in apt will in 10 years as it isn't
actionable as is. If that changes I am more than happy to reopen it.
