Package: apt Version: 1.1~exp12 Severity: wishlist Sometimes, APT ignores errors. For example, if there is an error while downloading Packages.xz, APT may ignore it and try to download Packages.gz instead. Currently, it is not easy to obtain the error message for such errors, which makes debugging these problems more difficult. I think that APT should either show details about such errors by default or have an option to enable this.

I think that APT should either show details about such errors by default or have an option to enable this. I agree and implemented this in 4dbfe436, but had to guard it in d6cf2345 behind a config option as I was told that it is too confusing for unsuspecting users… :( The option is Acquire::Progress::Ignore::ShowErrorText . I am planning to revisit the decision of enabling this by default or not after we got right of no/unsigned-Release repositories as that will drastically reduce the cases in which we show an Ign, but that will take some time (something around two full Debian releases…). As a lot can happen in four years I am closing this as done with the introduction of the option instead of keeping this open "for ever" until we decide on the 'final' value of this option (whatever final in this context actually means). Note that aptitude isn't effected by this option (yet?), even if it has a very similar output as they carry a copy of (an older version of) apts own progress reporting implementation.
