I found that, at least on kfreebsd-amd64 (in a sid chroot on falla.d.o),

  apt-cache --no-generate show libc0.1-dev

segfaults, and was able to reproduce the problem with a noopt build of
0.9.11.2, from which I've attached a backtrace.  Could you please take
a look?

For what its worth, this happily works in my kfreebsd-amd64 virtual
machine, so…

The problem is probably that the cache you forbid apt to generate is
broken, which can have interesting effects including but not limited to
segfaults.

Moral of this story: This flag can and should be used only if you are
sure that the cache is fine (e.g. because you have rebuild it a second
ago), but then again, apt is figuring this out byself and will not
rebuild caches needlessly…

This flag is mostly for cases in which you want apt to NOT work if the
cache isn't valid. So errors are expected, segfaults not so much, but
its hard to reproduce a problem 2 years after the fact, so… I am closing
in the hope that this was fixed drive-by-style in the meantime.

If by some miracle you can still reproduce this, feel free to reopen the
bug of course!
