Yes this was the basic reason why upgrade was not sufficientand the
reason why I tried  dist-upgrade. BUT the problem is elsewhere:
dist-upgrade did not find a correct upgrade path without removing only
the libical1 and replace it by libaical1a while installing a single
package did find this path.

And both commands were run using the same package file (no other update
between the two commands as per traces.
