Unfortunately I cannot test the proposed git diff, as I can't find a
tree that I can apply it against.
Could you please commit it and push as a branch somewhere, and/or provide:
$ git format-patch origin/debian/sid
patches?

I'm using git://anonscm.debian.org/apt/apt.git and that repository
does not have  apt-pkg/contrib/proxy.cc in any of its heads.
