This commit disabled InRelease (which is back in the meantime), so in your
testing you probably ended up switching from Release.gpg to InRelease
(or the other way around) which avoids the problem, but you can be hit by
this problem regardless of the usuage of InRelease or Release.gpg as can
be seen with the testcase I wrote for the problem:

I haven't checked, but I am relatively sure that this bug exists since
"ever" - this and that it is not security sensetive, has an easy workaround
and is in a command not that often used makes it unlikely that it will be
allowed to be fix in wheezy I guess.
